Terpenes are the aromatic compounds you smell in a lot of plants, cannabis included. They're what makes one strain smell like citrus and another smell earthy, from the bright lemon of Limonene to the musky Myrcene.
What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are natural oils that all kinds of plants produce. In cannabis, they come from the same sticky glands that make cannabinoids like THC and CBD. Cannabinoids do most of the heavy lifting on the effects you feel, but terpenes shape the flavor, the aroma, and the overall character of a strain.
Common Cannabis Terpenes
Myrcene: The most common terpene in cannabis. It smells earthy and a little musky, and it's usually linked to a relaxed, mellow feel.
Limonene: Citrusy and bright, like the name suggests. People often reach for it when they want a mood lift or some stress relief.
Pinene: Smells like a walk through pine trees. It's often connected to feeling clear-headed and alert.
Linalool: The same terpene you find in lavender. Floral and soft, and usually described as calming.
The Entourage Effect
Terpenes don't act on their own. They work alongside cannabinoids in what people call the "entourage effect," where the terpenes and the THC or CBD shift and shape how a strain actually feels. That's why two strains with the same THC number can hit completely differently.
